Élevé de Saint-Cyr de 1869 à 1870, Promotion du 14 août 1870, Chef de Bataillon en 1889, Colonel en 1902, commandant le 2è Régiment d'Infanterie, à Granville, jusqu'en 1909, quand il est élevé au grade de Général de Brigade et Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur Pendant la première guerre mondiale, en 1915 il est à l'initiative de l'affaire des " caporaux de Souain ", pour avoir fait fusiller pour l'exemple en particulier la caporal Theophile Maupas. Sa veuve a mené un combat acharné pour obtenir la réhabilitation de son mari, combat qui a donné lieu à adaptation télévisuelle . . Pourtant ces accusations qui ont été investigués après la guerre, n'ont jamais pour autant pu être prouvés et n'ont donné lieu à aucun procès. Il sera fait Général de division et Grand-Officier de la Légion d'honneur.
