Bayonet for Lebel rifle. So called Rosalie. With quillon.
Model 1886 bayonet for Lebel model 86/93 rifle with quillon. Hallmarks on the guard.
At the beginning of the Great War, bayonets were delivered with a quillon, which had a nasty tendency to get caught in barbed wire.
The quillon was quickly removed to avoid this type of inconvenience. Models with a quillon were therefore significantly rarer than those without.
Gradually, assaults were carried out without rifles or bayonets, which were too cumbersome in the narrow trenches.
The soldiers set out armed with a short, sharp-edged shovel and strings of grenades, which they threw into the enemy trenches.
The survivors were finished off with shovels. These moments reached a level of horror unique to the First World War.
Functional push button, global good condition.
Functional push button, oxidized steel quillon and guard, otherwise in very good overall condition.
Scabbard, grip, and blade in very good condition.
