Seditious game pieces made of boxwood. French manufacture. Christmas gift?
During the Restoration, openly displaying Napoleonic sympathies was strongly discouraged if one wanted to avoid trouble with the authorities... So, people used tricks! For example, they might hide an eagle button under their lapel, or they could carry a walking stick topped with a pommel that, when placed in front of a light source, reflected the shadow of the Emperor, wearing his famous bicorn hat! (See the first photo). These so-called "seditious" walking sticks were very popular during the Empire, but very few have survived to the present day, and when they are found, they are expensive, and copies are not uncommon. One of our clients, a craftsman, had the idea of turning some pommels that you could potentially adapt to walking sticks. Each piece is unique, as the wood used varies depending on the piece chosen.
