In the fervor of the Revolution, anything related to antiquity was considered worthy of esteem.
Thus, the students of the new military school, the so-called School of Mars, were dressed in uniforms designed by David in the Roman style, and equipped with swords also inspired by Roman designs.
Brass hilt.
Ovoid pommel with rivet button.
Hilt with twelve rows of scales. Tiny hole in the bronze (see photos); it is noted, but not readily apparent.
Rectangular crossguard with trapezoidal quillons.
Straight blade with a central ridge, 475 mm long, clearly marked with the fasces, but in a difficult-to-access location. Overall length 635 mm.
Laminated brass scabbard with two suspension rings, chased with the level of equality, a Masonic symbol.
The cap has a long palmette and a crescent-shaped point, with red wool fittings.
The blade fits into the sheath from the side we inserted it, without forcing it. If you try to insert the blade by rotating it 180°, you risk forcing it and damaging the bottom of the sheath. There's a little knack to it, after that it goes in easily.
Several variations exist among these swords, hastily made during this turbulent era. Ours lacks the "antennae" that usually extended from the crossguard. Is this an original omission, or simply a breakage? The price reflects this.
The March School provided both military and civic instruction, aiming to supply officers for the Revolutionary Army trained "in all republican virtues."
The School would train these young men "in Fraternity, Discipline, Frugality, Love of Country, and Hatred of Kings," whether they were "brave like Decius, virtuous like Aristides, or tactically astute like Xenophon."
It was active for a very short time, from June 1, 1794, to October 23, 1794, following the fall of Robespierre.
The 3,500 swords produced were then sent to the students' homes, eventually gracing collections around the world a few decades later.
