Bronze hilt of the chasseur type with a long-tailed pommel, three-branch guard, and quillons.
A model exists specifically for officers, but some preferred the more robust and "expeditious" look of the enlisted model, with a few modifications—after all, one didn't become an officer to use the same weapons as the troops!
Murat is depicted with such a saber in period paintings.
Officers could purchase their own sabers from cutlers. The following differences are usually noticeable:
The grip is covered in leather and, on this model, features brass wire wrapping, which is absent on the enlisted models.
The brass olives, however, are missing from the grip.
Numerous hallmarks and markings on the guard.
The curved blade has a wide fuller and is marked with three hallmarks from the Klingenthal Manufactory: Kranz, Lobstein, and Bisch. All three correspond to individuals active during the same period as the engraving on the back of the blade: "Manuf Imp du Klingenthal septembre 1813" (Klingenthal Manufactory, September 1813).
The scabbard is very heavy. The chape is quite characteristic of the model in use during the First Empire; it is even one of the criteria for detecting copies. It is wider at the bottom than at the top, which makes sense, as the lower part is the part that would potentially rub against the ground.
A good piece, a true example of a light cavalry chasseur saber, typical of the final years of the First Empire.
Weight with scabbard: 2380 g, saber alone: 1097 g.
The scabbard of this sword had been painted black to conceal its heavy oxidation, a less than ideal but common practice.
These scabbards are very thick, making it difficult for rust to penetrate, but it's thanks to this that the blades survive in such good condition.
We chose to strip the paint from this scabbard to restore a more "natural" appearance, but as a result, it's quite shiny, and it will take some time to develop a more pleasing patina. The hilt also received a light polish to even everything out. In a year or two, the whole piece will look more like an antique.
Total length: 1020 mm, including a blade of 885 mm. Uncommon model.
