Cutlass, french type 1833T. Without scabbard
A cutlass, 1833 type, with a blackened iron hilt and hallmarks. The protective plate has been removed and the guard thinned to serve as a machete in Africa or Asia.
Hence the name 1833 T, for "Transformed." These swords were still in use in Indochina during the final years of the French presence.
French soldiers and auxiliaries sometimes carried weapons, some of which were marked "Manufacture Royale..." (Royal Manufacture...), like the example offered for sale!
The curved blade is also hallmarked and engraved with a naval anchor. The mark on the back, though difficult to see in the photos, reads "Manufacture Rle de Ch..." (Royal Manufacture of Ch...).
The original manufacture of this sword dates back to the period 1833-1848. In 1848, France transitioned to the Second Republic, never to return to a monarchy.
Total length 82 cm, blade 68 cm. The blade is oxidized but can be cleaned better. The set is as we found it
1833 type cutlass was withdrawn from service in the early 1900s.
Uncommon!
